Jed is a Mini donkey. He was taken from his mom when he was only 36 hours old because he had no comprehension of how to suckle. I syringe fed him and doctored him for the first 12 days as he lived in my house. He still just could not suckle. We are not sure why. He just didn’t seem to know how.
For the first 3 weeks of his tiny little short life it didn’t seem like he was going to make it. He had liquid diarrhea and was on the verge of total dehydration. Jed fought like a champ though. All the meds and veterinary care must have kicked in. One day he just started to nuzzle the bottle and suckling came to him. His diarrhea was getting under control and he was starting to thrive.
Jed is a true little miracle. He is now 4 months old. Lives in the house with me. He sleeps on the bed sometimes and hangs out on the couch to watch his nightly TV shows. He thinks he’s a dog.
Jed has doubled in weight and has now informed me he is too big for the bottle so he weaned himself. He eats lots of grass all day and has his special alfalfa grain mix when he comes back to the house. I think he is a dog too. He comes when he is called. He is better housebroken than my six month old puppy. He licks the ice cream dish clean just like the dogs.
He is well on his way to greatness. Jed is not available for adoption. He is in training as a service animal and if he can get approved (being an equine) that will be his career.
